SUMMER READING LIST: THE SKIRT CHRONICLES
The Skirt Chronicles is our favorite new magazine from Paris. We were lucky enough to have an event with its three effervescent co-founders in April of this year at Small Shop in the Marias. Sarah, Haydée & Sofia are some of the smartest, coolest, and most enthusiastic people we've been involved with in a long time. We're honored to carry Skirt Chronicles in our Oakland shop & we're very pleased to share a few summer reading recommendation from these amazing women.

Life at the Dakota by Stephen Birmingham
I'm quite obsessed by the history of the gilded age (especially in New York), The Beatles and Lauren Bacall, so it's the perfect book for me! I prefer the cover of the first edition (1979).
The Photographer's Cookbook by Lisa Hostetler
During the summer I become more interested in the kitchen. I collect funny and sometimes weird cookbooks from artists in particular.
In this one you can find the recipe of William Eggleston’s Cheese Grits Casserole or Ed Ruscha’s Cactus Omelet.

Haydée Touitou (Writer)
The summer is a great time for reading long books. The luxury of finally having time to stay with a story without being bothered by everyday life distractions. Next summer I look forward to reading two books I've received as a present some time ago now. Books I would have maybe never chosen by myself, but I look forward to discovering them as well as diving into the historical facts they bear within them: Isaac Babel's Complete Works and Juliet Nicolson’s A House Full of Daughters.

I am looking forward to reading the latest book by one of my favorite authors Haruki Murakami, Men Without Women. His novels are so mesmerizing that although my body will be under the Italian sun my mind will be in Tokyo.
I am also looking forward to taking the time to read Soetsu Yanagi and Bernard Leach Letters - from 1912 to 1959. I am planning a road trip around Cornwall and visiting Leach’s studio. These personal letters are filled with history and passion, just like both of their ceramic work.

Thanks, Sarah, Haydée, and Sofia!
