Born and Raised in London, Stephen Spender's home became a meeting place for many of the 20th century's greatest artistic minds; his kin included the likes of Pablo Picasso, Francis Bacon, and David Hockney. Some of Henry Moore's only ventures into portraiture depicted Spender, the author and social commentator frozen in contemplation. In the words of his son Matthew, Spender's personal interest in the artist was rooted in a need to understand "how art was made; it wasn't just a matter of just buying a picture which interested him." Stephen also believed, in a time when the globe was falling into the ravaging cycles of fascism, art created avenues to "help find a common humanity."
