Halifax. Earl Hearn. 1981. First Edition. Softcover w. pictorial cover. Book Condition: Fine, slightly edge worn. (ill. in b/w).
Front cover: "They both got what they wanted" [Polaroid advertisement], Life magazine, 2 December 1957.
Alan Harris’ modest photo book is as touching and familiar as it is haunting, in its pseudo-scrapbook articulation of that edge between a personal and a public archive. His materials collate together family photos, vintage camera advertisements, news clippings from a particular sort of “Luckiest Generation,” and personal anecdotes that connect Harris’ life to the fragments in this publication, by riding the page-breaking distance between them. At the heart of Harris’ project is a question about the way we remember in the age of photography, and the subsequent commodification of nostalgia that testifies to the past’s irresistibility, and the generational consequences of living in a market that treats memory as a site of supply and demand.
