Lynch's paintings, watercolors, drawings, lithographs, photographs, and- most recently- musical compositions are an indispensable component of his creative work. His art works share subject matter, motifs, and a repertoire of forms with his films. In his images, David Lynch introduces the viewer to a world governed by nightmares and the uncanny. Dark, muted colors and shifts proportion and perspective characterize his paintings; his photographs often show decay and transitoriness. Visual expectations are constantly undermined; disorienting photographic alienation and the disturbing eroticism of his reworked nude photography expand the scope of his artistic visions.
The monograph was prepared in conjunction with the major David Lynch retrospective at the Max Ernst Museum Brühl of the LVR. With essays by Dietmar Dath, Stefanie Diekmann, Thomas W. Gaehtgens, Andreasn Platthaus, Peter-Klaus Schuster, and Werner Spies, it offers a gripping survey of Lynch's unusual oeuvre, focusing on his activity in both cinema and the visual arts.
