Prévert, France's most widely-read poet since Victor Hugo, figured as parts of the Surrealist movements in writing and theater in the early 20th century. Having been "expelled" from the organization in 1930, Prévert's writing took on a satirical edge, challenging the likes of Andre Breton in "Death of a Gentleman" and making socially-relevant commentary, as in the majorly successful premier poem in this collection, "Attempt to Describe a Dinner of Heads in Paris - France." This anthology was pulled together by René Bertelé in 1945 from newspapers, reviews, cabaret songs, and scribblings from the backs of Prévert's envelopes and paper tablecloths at cafés.
